Danny Russell

This is part of a series of articles introducing the members of the Tri Training Harder Race Team: number 2 in series of 6.

Age: 31

Main race: World Duathlon Championships in October.

Main aim: Podium at the World Duathlon Championships.

Thoughts on the race team:The team this year is great. It's a small tight knit team of people who know where their going and won't give up until they get there. With the whole IST behind us this year you can really feel the support and know that every single person is pulling out all of the stops to make our dreams become reality. I feel incredibly privileged to be on the same team and to have been elected as the captain of the team by these guys as and I am genuinely excited to see where we go this year.’

What’s in store for 2015;

Danny’s race diary in 2015 looks relatively busy with some fantastic opportunities to produce great results in the Professional field. This year Danny is focussing more on duathlon racing at European and World races and with his track background and performance in his 2014 events looks set to really achieve his aims this year. He will also be racing in triathlon events possibly in the Super Series and also 70.3 UK events.

Danny says; ‘Taking the step from age group into pro last year was a daunting but exciting challenge. The learning curve was steep and there is nowhere to hide but the support of the Tri Training Harder team really helped to ensure no stone was left unturned in my preparation. This culminated in my season highlight of my first elite Great British team. Now to build on this for 2015!’

Career:

Danny’s currently works as the Design Lead for a Payment Clearing System for UK's Largest Payment Provider, Worldpay. The system operates in over 120 currencies, for merchants all over the world and 15 million+ payments every day. It is a very mentally demanding job but the company has also been brilliant in supporting Danny and letting him work part-time to focus on triathlon.

This has enabled him to train and race as a Professional athlete over the past year and into this year whilst also allowing him to take advantage of the Tri Training Harder training base in the Algarve.

Background:

Danny Russell became a Professional triathlete in 2014 after having a very successful year in 2012 as an age grouper resulted in European and World Championship medals. He lives in London but is originally from Australia. He has always been passionate about sport, initially racing middle distance on the track, but now he is well and truly into triathlons and has been racing for just over 2 years. Prior to his years as a triathlete, Danny was an incredibly successful track runner at 1500m during which time he had the opportunity to trial for the Australian Track & Field Team for the Olympic Games.
