Physiological Testing

Tri Training Harder has partnered with The Altitude Centre to offer additional physiological testing. These are completed in their performance laboratory in London and will be booked through their booking system.

For anyone looking to test their current and potential endurance performance, physiological testing sessions can provide athletes with a full fitness profile, including VO2 max, Lactate Thresholds, and exercise economy. Testing is conducted on a treadmill or Wattbike,  according to the athlete’s training type. A fully detailed report is provided post-testing from The Altitude Centre’s sports scientists, as well as a follow-up call to help make the most of the data for training and racing!

Key Benefits of Performance Testing:

  1. Indication of current fitness levels and potential for performance.

  2. Identify training zones to use for your next block of training.

  3. Assess exercise economy and fuel utilisation to guide future training and racing strategies.

The test options are a VO2Max test, a Lactate profiling test or a combination:

VO2Max Tests (75 mins) – The ultimate indicator of endurance performance and aerobic capacity (the maximum amount of oxygen you can use every minute. This is a cornerstone of fitness testing. During this test, the intensity will gradually increase while oxygen usage is recorded. This identifies metabolic thresholds along with your sport economy. This will allow us to identify strengths and weaknesses as well as any areas we can look to exploit in training programmes.

Lactate Threshold Testing (75 mins) – This test uses finger-pricked blood samples to identify your lactate threshold and create accurate and individual training zones. The most accurate test to determine training zones and pinpoint the maximum intensity that can be sustained for extended periods of time. During the testing, fingertip blood sampling is used to assess the accumulation of lactate in the blood, from which an athlete’s two lactate thresholds can be determined (LT1 & LT2). This test can be done at altitude or sea level to accurately test your zones for the location you are racing in.

Combined Test (90 mins) – For those who want the full physiological profile, they can do a combined VO2Max and Lactate Threshold Test to gain an insight into both their endurance potential and current metabolic thresholds and training zones. A combined test ensures that you get both sets of results – your lactate threshold and your VO2Max, economy and metabolic profiles.

Any of these tests can be completed on a treadmill, rowing machine or Wattbike to ensure that the results are sport-specific.

After the testing, athletes will receive a report from their sports scientists with all the key information, which can be shared with their coach. Additionally, a follow-up call will help the athlete put together an efficient plan with their coach on what needs to be focussed on next.

TTH athletes receive a discount. Please book through the athlete zone.
