Syros is a hidden gem of a Greek Island, located in the Aegean Sea just South of Athens. Syros, the capital of the Agean, is home to beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine and a temperate climate all year round. The quiet roads and empty beaches are the perfect home for a triathlon camp. Try something different this year and join us on the stunning island of Syros for a hard training week that will be a challenge for everyone.

Due to the historic town and the trendy waterfront in the main town or the beach-front hotel we have reserved for you, there really is something for everyone and this is a perfect getaway for people to come and join us for a week while their partner does the training. This island is one of the places to visit in Greece and is off the beaten track so becomes a brilliant find for both the athlete and those looking for a more relaxing trip!

Further detailed information about the camp

  • General overview

Accommodation is in the stunning 4-star Dolphin Bay Hotel in Galissas. The Dolphin Bay Hotel is designed in the typical Cycladic architecture and overlooks the stunning bay, one of the top beaches on the island. If you want to travel with a non-training partner, or family, then this is an ideal resort for them to enjoy while you do the hard miles.

    More about the rooms

The rooms are elegantly equipped in the classic Cycladic style making them light and airy. There are individual air conditioning units.

There are no washing facilities at this accommodation.

    Room upgrades

The prices above are for their basic double rooms, but upgrades are available for £20/room per night.

  • The accommodation package for this trip includes a buffet breakfast and depending on the numbers attending a buffet or three-course lunchtime or evening meal. We are confident that the friendly Greek hospitality will keep you rested and ready for your upcoming training ahead.

There will be optional group meals out in the evenings (or lunch time depending on training), but these are not included.

  • General information.

You have three options to get to the island of Syros:

    1) Fly to Athens airport then take the ferry to Syros. A bus service goes straight to the port and taking your bike on the ferry is easy.

    2) Fly to Athens Airport and then fly to Syros (JSY). NB, you will need to add your bike as extra luggage on the small plane. (£15kg allowance, and then excess luggage fees may need to be paid)

    3) Fly to Mykonos International airport and get the short ferry to Syros.

Excess luggage on the ferries is free. It will sound bizarre, but leave the bike in the luggage section on the car deck and collect it on your way back. It saves you from taking it up into the main part of the ferry and is quite safe.

    Transfers

Transfers are included with this camp price.

Let us know where you arriving (airport or port) and we will be there to pick you up with a transfer to the hotel.

    Arrival and Departure times

We will not be able to guarantee your room access until 2pm and you will need to be out of your rooms at 11am on the last day of your stay.

Where possible, we will try and arrange early check-in and late departure.

  • This camp has access to the following training facilities:

    – Coaching is led by our Senior Master Coach, Philip Hatzis

    – Guiding & Coaching all included

    – Personal report for you to take home

    – the option for HD video analysis with feedback as required

    – Laned 25m swimming pool within the hotel complex.

    – Open water swimming takes place a few meters from your room off one of the most stunning beaches on the island in the beautiful Mediterranean sea.

    – Challenging island-style hills with some technical descents and superb views

    – Mechanical support in the local town

    – Trail and paved running sessions

    Kit choice suggestions:

    – We would strongly recommend bringing a wetsuit with you: the sea temperature can be variable at that time of year

    – TT bikes are welcome. Make sure your gearing is suitable for hilly rides.

    – The road surface is generally good to OK, with a few of the roads being a little rough. We would suggest tyres that are not fully “race-slick” and have some resilience.

    – Trail shoes would be advised, but the conditions are generally gravel or concrete roads.

  • General Overview

The focus of this camp is high-precision training, with sessions designed to either build more strength or extend your endurance with sessions that you might shy away from if you were on your own!

With an onsite pool and the open water only a finish line’s distance from your bed, there is definitely a skew towards swimming on this camp. The bike and run sessions are designed to be more focused and session-based, allowing all athletes to take part without interfering with the others’ training. This week is all about embracing hard sessions with other like-minded individuals. With the beautiful island backdrop, there is no better way to relax afterwards or recover between sessions in the bustling yet relaxed Agean island in the heart of the Cyclades.

    Suggested Ability Level

The coaching team have put together a gruelling training package that should challenge even the best athletes, while encouraging athletes of any ability to “have a go”. This shouldn’t put off any athletes, as there will be ample opportunity to refine techniques and learn throughout the week. This is a hard week of training, but the social element makes it an ideal way to learn quickly.

The swimming in this camp is magical. With these ideal conditions, we are able to offer some excellent high volume sessions to really set you up for the race season:

    – Extensive threshold sessions

    – Strength endurance sessions

    – Double swim days (!)

    – Rides to the forgotten north of the island

    – Steady rides to enjoy the famous greek cafe life and rest the legs

    – Extensive threshold repeats

    – Bike handling work

    Run

Running on Syros is all about managing the heat and balancing the hills. Sessions include:

    – 1km bricks

    – Trail runs along the headlands

    – Plenty of brick opportunities

  • The expected weather for Syros in June is usually excellent. We recommend that you make sure you pack for warm conditions but do back a couple of extra layers as we are just on the edge of their summer season, so there could be a couple of cooler days.

Both the BBC and Dark Sky are good resources.

  • Bikes available

We do have very limited access to local bike shops for bike hire, but we would recommend you bring your own bike as it is very limited and sizing will be questionable.

    Accessories

If hiring a bike, we suggest you bring your helmet and pedals with you. Depending on your saddle type, it may be worth bringing your own saddle too.

  • This is a half-board training camp and so breakfast and one meal costs are included.

You will need some money for cafe stops when out and about and if you wanted to purchase any snacks as well as the extra meal.

I attended the Syros Training Camp (my first triathlon camp ever) and it exceeded any kinds of expectation. Before the camp, the TTH team patiently answered every single question I had and provided hints and tips on the trip preparation. The whole onboarding process was smooth and straightforward, and the team was always responsive and helpful.

The training week itself was unbelievable. I learnt so much more than the past 3 years of triathlon training on my own, both physically and mentally, and I feel stronger and wiser after the camp, like a new-born triathlete. The sessions always push me to my boundaries and involve technical details that are specific to my needs. The chance to compete in 3 different events within the week was a great bonus, and the end-of-camp Syrathlon was a very special race.

I got to meet the locals (family & friends of the coach) and explore the beautiful Syros island through swim, bike and run. Apart from the training, the social element of the camp (the coach’s hometown) also made it an extra special experience.

The coaching was effective, tailored and creative. The TTH team is genuine, friendly and helpful. I highly recommend TTH to any triathletes who want to “believe, strive, achieve”.

My experience with Tri Training Harder exceeded all expectations. The programme was well structured, timed to precision making sure there were appropriate breaks for food, travel between and preparation. The sessions were designed for a range of abilities and motivations. It’s up to you to decide how hard you want to push yourself. And the coaches had expert knowledge - from both training and experience - which was invaluable. From advice on changes to technique and pacing strategies, to technical skills like turning in the water, a huge range of wisdom was imparted. The coaches pay attention to every little detail and really put you as the athlete, their guest at the core of everything they do whilst having great banter throughout.
— Katee H
The whole experience was fantastic from start to finish and I can’t recommend TTH highly enough. TTH have a diverse team of coaches who are all of the highest quality, with the coaches able to cater for all levels of experience and ability, and adapt sessions as they go to suit each athlete’s needs.
