Tim Ansell

Triathlon Coach based in Surrey, UK.

As a Coach

Tim qualified as a coach in 2010, in 2014 began coaching with a local Triathlon Club, in 2018 completed BTF level 3 coaching course. Tim is always looking to develop and improve knowledge through CPD courses, especially Strength & Conditioning and Biomechanics. Having spent time working alongside Physiotherapists allows him to put this experience into practice with athletes and online coaching. Tim is organised, forward-thinking and continually developing through CPD modules.

Since starting his coaching journey, Tim has become more immersed in understanding the different ways of getting the best out of athletes, which has meant fewer competitions for him. Tim still enjoys the training but is now concentrating on the coaching through sharing his knowledge, helping, and supporting athletes achieve the best they can be. Tim is also a Mentor for British Triathlon coaches.

Having previously spent several years in the fast-paced world of Food Retail in various roles and responsibilities, including project management, Tim understands the demands of a busy lifestyle and a demanding job. Therefore, Tim believes in having a flexible approach to working with athletes to respond to their individual needs and responsiveness to different approaches to training.

Tim has attended several different training camps across Europe and learnt about the best practise from some top coaches around what is good and not so good. Every coach offers something different, and the essence of working with a coach is building a relationship. To ensure an athlete achieves and develops, their continued progression is built upon a successful, ever-evolving coach-athlete relationship. Tim firmly believes in not viewing training in isolation but rather implementing a holistic focus where the program is planned in the context of a healthy body and a fulfilling life. This will lead to increased performances and a more enjoyable triathlon experience.

As an Athlete

Tim started out as a runner competing in half marathons (PB: 1:17) and marathons (PB 2:56) before finding the love of cycling and enjoying touring through the Alps, Pyrenees, Dolomites, Catalonia. He also enjoyed riding in Boulder, Colorado, while attending Endurance Coaching Summit (ECS) 2019.

Once he found triathlons, he never once believed he would complete an IRONMAN, but as the confidence, fitness, and experience grew, he entered his first IM (PB: 12:10) five years after doing an Olympic distance (PB: 2:20).

70.3's (PB: 5:05) became the distance he enjoyed most, especially if they included a city break: a great way of seeing some exciting places and competing in a race at the same time – now that's a win-win!

Talent alone should not determine how far you take your triathlon journey; passion, enthusiasm, and lifestyle should.

Q & A with Tim

When did you get into triathlon? 2010 and the London Triathlon
How did you first get involved in triathlon?
By supporting a friend and thinking, I can do this. Which was a wake-up call as I'd never learnt to swim until then!

What is your favourite discipline? The bike, there is nothing more inspiring than cycling in locations where one of the major tours pass through and seeing the chalk markings on the road.

Why did you choose to take up coaching? An opportunity came about through work and the London Olympics supporting those to get into sport or helping those who would like to begin coaching. I took the chance with gusto and never looked back.

What is your greatest athletic achievement? I generally see myself as a 'jack of all trades, master of none' However, running a sub 3hr marathon or completing an IRONMAN definitely is up there.

What is your greatest coaching achievement? When you have supported or guided an athlete to achieve their individual goal, it doesn't matter what it is. To hear those words, 'Thank You' means a lot

What one piece of advice would you give someone new to triathlon? Start slow, build knowledge, experience and don't forget to smile!

Something you won't find out in an interview? I enjoy a great tasting coffee from local independent coffee roasters, and I hope to continue my journey of exploring coffee and completing my barista training.

Favourite quote: "You'll never achieve real success unless you like what you are doing" or "Unless you try something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow."

"It never gets easier, you just get faster "- Greg Lemond
