Rehab Hamdy

Triathlon and Endurance Coach based in Cairo, Egypt

As a Coach

Rehab's coaching journey began in 2018 when she started as a swimming coach at a swimming academy for adults. Despite still studying mass communication at the time, Rehab's experience in swimming allowed her to improve techniques and teach individuals from scratch.

In 2021, Rehab joined the Apollo team as a triathlon coach. This opportunity took her to a different city, where she worked seasonally. Upon returning, Rehab started the USAT Coaching Course, further expanding her knowledge and expertise in triathlon.

In 2022, Rehab started coaching at the Stamina Tri Team, working closely with dedicated athletes.

In July 2023, Rehab launched her own triathlon team, Root Multisport. This step allowed her to create a supportive community for triathletes. In August 2023, she finished the USAT Level 1 Triathlon Coach specialising in long-course.

As an Athlete

Rehab Hamdy started swimming at four and joined national championships at 12. She won multiple medals and the Best Swimming Trophy in 2011. She also earned medals in the national open-water swimming championships

Rehab was spotted by a triathlon coach in 2012 and joined the triathlon team. She was the first Arab woman to qualify for the Youth Olympic Games in 2014. She got 3rd place at the African Games Botswana 2014. In 2015, she qualified for the WTS grand final in Chicago. She also won multiple African championships.

After her father's passing in 2017, Rehab faced setbacks in her athletic career. However, she made a strong return in 2018, securing a third-place finish in the African Cup elite category in 2019 and winning bronze in the relay team at the African Games.

In 2023, Rehab suffered a cervical spine injury but remains determined to recover and return to racing.

Q&A with Rehab

When did you get into triathlon? My triathlon experience started in 2012

How did you first get involved in triathlon? While running in track, a triathlon coach invited rehab to join the triathlon team.

What is your favourite discipline? Swimming

Why did you choose to take up coaching? Despite graduating with an excellent degree, Rehab chose coaching instead of a career in mass communication. She wanted to make a positive impact and leave a lasting impact in triathlon coaching in Africa and the Middle East.

What is your greatest athletic achievement? I have had an exciting and fulfilling career in triathlon racing at WTS and youth elite level.

What is your greatest coaching achievement? I haven't achieved big goals yet, but I recently qualified an athlete for his first IRONMAN. One of my athletes secured first place at the African Cup in the Youth category, and another athlete won first place at the African Championship AG category.

What one piece of advice would you give someone new to triathlon? If you are new to triathlon, enjoy your journey and celebrate each small step along the way. Be patient because the key to triathlon is consistency.
