Articles
In this article Coach Alan writes about how the recovery part of your swim stroke can play a significant role in your performance. Swimming is renowned in age group triathlon for often being the difficult ‘one’, the one in which no matter how hard you try it doesn’t seem to get any better. Often this is put down to a lack of ‘correct’ technique, but was it correct technique? In this instance which is correct: a straight arm recovery or a high elbow recovery?
‘It depends’ is often the coach’s default answer but in this article, Coach Alan will try and explain ‘how’ it depends.
Here coach Kevin talks about running mechanics and how running could be considered more technical than swimming. However, we spend so much more time talking about swimming technique and “long runs”. Have we got this the wrong way round?
Coach Tracy discusses the benefits of virtual land-based swim training, having already witnessed the success of the first TTH-swim-live program that has been implemented since January.
In the second of our three-part articles, coach Soraya talks us through the key steps to go through just before you have signed up for, just after signing up for and the final lead into to an IRONMAN race. Read on for the beginner’s guide to IRONMAN.
Keeping training on plan and IRONMAN specific as well as conquering the open water are two big considerations for IRONMAN athletes in their final block of training. Maintaining focus in training and overcoming a huge barrier to IRONMAN events (the open water swim) can prove problematic for some athletes. In this blog we' will try to guide you through these two areas of your preparation.
We often get asked: "how can you make a meaningful difference using run analysis while on a 1 week training camp?". This is a very fair point as it’s easy when doing video analysis to just 'say what you see' and end up patching up or correcting outcomes rather than identifying root-causes. When it comes to video analysis, there is an old saying which is that the analysis is only as good as the person interpreting the data. This blog explores whether run analysis could help you understand if you should be changing your running technique.
As athletes we get to that time in the year when all races have been raced and we are in our 'off season'. However, for most of us we notice the only thing that changes is that we have said we are taking an off season. Is that change in approach sufficient? Or should we be more strict on taking time out? Here we discuss the benefits of taking time out and how an off-season can help you to peak higher than you have before.
Elaine Garvican reflects on her 2016 season. Her coach, Philip Hatzis dissects some of the observations and offers some insights to where changes were made in order to improve her overall performance in the races that mattered.
Podcast
Pretty much every triathlete has posed the question: “how can I improve my run?” when looking at the results list. “Improving my run” is the most common request that athletes have when come to us for coaching.
In this episode, we listen to the Coaches on the Couch, where Coaches Alan, Diogo and Philip discuss how can you run faster off the bike and what aspects you need to consider to be able to improve your run for the race day. These coaches review the different options often athletes consider as well as suggesting a straightforward approach to action as you aim to improve your run off the bike.
In this episode, our coaches on the couch discussed sitting and its impact on performance. This is an increasingly important subject as, with the current situation where most of us work from home; we tend to spend a huge amount of time sitting down. How can this affect your performance? How will this change your posture? What can and should do to avoid any future issues? Listen to what Coach Tracy, Philip and Alan have to say about it in this podcast as they help navigate sitting and how you can improve your home-working space. If nothing else, we will guarantee you will spend the episode checking your own posture while you listen!
In this episode, we talk with Trevor Perkins. Trevor is one of our longer-standing coaches, and he is totally passionate about endurance sports. As a sports fanatic when he was younger (he almost picked up a pro card in surfing), Trevor found his calling in endurance sports. Eventually, he moved into coaching, where he is one of our most attentive and caring coaches. His attention to detail and athlete welfare is inspiring. He has coached future IRONMAN Champions, Kona qualifiers, Yukon podium athletes, as well as ultra trail athletes too.
Trevor shares with us his experience and expertise not only about triathlon but also about Ultra Endurance Running too, what motivates him and how he manages to be able to do so many miles running. As a competitive “Master” Trevor is the envy of all our younger coaches as not many of them can keep up in swim, bike, or run and that is over the distances Trevor is bad at, no one dares take him at ultras! Join us to hear what Trevor has to say, as he is always worth listening to.
Alistair is one of our high performing coached athletes. In this episode he shares with us how a High Performance Rower ended up doing triathlon: what motivated him to change for this sport and what he learned when he started being coached by Tri Training Harder. Alistair is a phenomenal cyclist but he enjoys learning the process of going faster and sometimes that process doesn’t mean you need to do things harder.
