As a Coach

Victor Hugo Moreno Contreras began his official career as a triathlon and trail running coach over 20 years ago, bringing a wealth of experience in creating personalised training programs for athletes at all levels. His expertise extends to fitness conditioning, swimming, Pilates, and acceleration training. Victor's ability to communicate fluently in both English and Spanish, combined with his extensive knowledge of training techniques and internationally recognised certifications, makes him a distinguished figure in the field of endurance sports coaching.

Victor's educational background is impressive, including certifications such as the IRONMAN Certification from IRONMAN University in 2016, Sicced Athletics Levels 1 and 2 from CONADE in Mexico City in 2013, and Training Peaks Level 1 and Level 2 Coach Accreditation between 2021 and 2022. He is also pursuing Levels 1, 2, and 3 certifications from the Federación Mexicana de Triatlón.

Victor has taken numerous specialised courses throughout his career, ranging from Spinning and Body Shaping to Total Immersion Swimming and Natural Running. His dedication to continuous learning and improvement is evident in his participation in advanced training programs and summits, such as the Endurance Coaching Summit and various courses from Training Peaks University.

Victor specialises in developing personalized training plans tailored to each athlete's needs. His approach is science-based, incorporating advanced techniques and tools to maximise athletic performance. He has successfully coached athletes in triathlon, trail running, ultradistance triathlon, and ultramarathons.

As an Athlete

Victor's journey in sports began early, fueled by an active lifestyle. He started by competing in cycling and later explored various sports like rock climbing and canyoning. His passion for triathlon was ignited in his early 20s when he participated in his first triathlon, deciding to experience the training and racing first-hand. This decision allowed him to gain practical insights, complementing his theoretical knowledge.

Today, Victor is an accomplished triathlete, ultradistance triathlete, and ultradistance runner with over a decade of racing experience. His commitment to understanding the sport's nuances from an athlete's perspective has significantly enriched his coaching approach, making him a well-rounded and empathetic coach.

Victor has competed in numerous triathlons, including ultradistance triathlons and several ultramarathons, constantly striving to improve his performance and knowledge. He aims to continue participating in endurance events and aspires to help his athletes achieve their personal bests.

Q&A with Victor

When did you get into triathlon? I got into triathlon over three decades ago, driven by my passion for endurance sports and a desire to expand my coaching expertise.

How did you first get involved in triathlon? I first got involved in triathlon through an invitation from my first coach, who invited me to participate in my first triathlon in Ixtapa Zihuatanejo, México, with a borrowed bike. My interest in experiencing the sport first-hand led me to participate in triathlon events, which deepened my understanding and passion for the sport.

What is your favourite discipline?  My favourite disciplines are running and cycling, which he has enjoyed since his early years in sports.

Why did you choose to take up coaching? I chose to take up coaching to share my knowledge and passion for endurance sports. I find great satisfaction in helping athletes achieve their goals and reach their full potential.

What is your greatest athletic achievement? My greatest athletic achievement is completing several ultradistance triathlons and ultramarathons and continually improving my performance over the years.

What is your greatest coaching achievement? My greatest coaching achievement is seeing my athletes succeed and surpass their own expectations, whether it's moving up in rankings or achieving personal bests. Notably, I coached an athlete with no swimming or cycling background to perform excellently in a 70.3 IRONMAN in less than four months using a borrowed triathlon bike.

What one piece of advice would you give someone new to triathlon? "Consistency is key. Stay committed to your training, be patient with your progress, and enjoy the journey."
