Will Munday

Triathlon Coach and professional triathlete based in Swansea, Wales, UK.

As a Coach

Will joined Tri Training Harder in 2015 as a guide. Having immersed himself in regular opportunities to assist the other coaches while completing his BTF level 2, he has now fully joined the coaching team and is one of our head coaches and longer-standing coaches. He has excellent experience of working with performance focussed athletes, but many are surprised to hear he has great succeses with older athletes as well as those postpartum.

Will merges his vast coaching experience on training camps and working with athletes of all standards with her personal enjoyment of finding the next marginal gain in performance.

Will blends kindness with a genuine desire to see athletes succeed and regularly updates the coaching team with information about the latest research.

Q & A

Where are you based? Swansea

When did you get into triathlon? I actually did my first triathlon when I was 9 but was doing a whole load of other sports at the time and didn't train specifically for it. However, triathlon became my main sport back in 2014 after cycling for a few years.

How did you first get involved in triathlon? I did my first triathlon as a 9 year old as I wanted to be like my dad and then in 2014 because of a bet between Dads friends that I would beat him, which I didn't but he wouldn't have a chance now!

What is your favourite discipline? A few years ago I would have probably said the cycling but I am currently enjoying all three.

Why did you choose to take up coaching? I enjoy seeing others develop as athletes and share their personal successes with them.

What is your greatest athletic achievement? Looking back at where I started in triathlon and where I am now.

What is your greatest coaching achievement? Helping out at my local tri club with the junior athletes and seeing their progress.

What one piece of advice would you give someone new to triathlon? Focus on the things you can control, not what you can't.

Favourite quote (something that reflects your approach to coaching and life):

I wouldn't really say I have a favourite quote but one I have heard from my dad a few times is: Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn't matter whether you're the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you'd better be running. - Christopher McDougall

As an athlete

Sports have been a huge part of Will's life growing up, where he played rugby and cricket and enjoyed skiing. As a child, he competed in a handful of kids’ races, but he didn't really get into triathlon until the summer of 2013, after his final season of playing rugby. 2014 saw his first proper season of racing, where he predominantly raced sprint distances alongside a couple of standard-distance triathlons.

After finishing as the fastest British age-grouper at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in 2019., Will picked up his pro card has raced 70.3 distance as a professional athlete ever since.
